Hooves on the move - Horsebox and trailer checks

Checking your horsebox or trailer before winter use and prior to getting going again in the spring is essential for safety, reliability, and keeping on top of any repairs needed.

Booking your horsebox or trailer into an approved inspection centre or local garage is advised, but there are checks you can keep an eye on yourself too.

Pre-travel checklist:

• Lights - Ensure headlights, indicators, and brake lights are working
• Reflectors - Clean reflectors to maintain visibility
• Tyre pressure - Check and adjust to the recommended PSI
• Tyre tread - Ensure tyres have a legal and safe tread depth (ideally 3mm or more)
• Tyre condition - Cold weather can cause cracks, especially if your trailer/horsebox has been sitting for a while
• Battery life - Cold weather reduces battery efficiency, check your battery for corrosion on terminals
• Oil - Check oil levels and top up if necessary
• Coolant - Make sure the engine’s coolant system has the correct antifreeze mix to prevent freezing
• Check flooring - Make sure the flooring is dry and free from rot or damage
• Ventilation - Ensure vents aren’t blocked, good airflow prevents condensation and ammonia build-up from urine
• Leaks - Inspect the roof and windows for water leaks as moisture can cause rust and damage electricals
• Fire extinguisher - Ensure your fire extinguisher is in good working order and hasn’t expired
• Tow hitch - Ensure the tow hitch and coupling can move freely and are free from rust or damage, lubricate if necessary
• Safety chains and breakaway cable -  Inspect for wear/damage. Replace any worn parts immediately

DON'T FORGET ...

• Insurance - Ensure your horsebox or trailer is fully insured at all times
• Recovery - Make sure you have breakdown cover that includes horse transport

TOP TIP - Keep an emergency kit including; 

• Tow rope
• Jump leads
• De-icer and scraper
• Torch and spare batteries
• Spare blankets for you and your horse/s
• Spare Hay net and water for your horse/s
• Mobile phone and fully charged power bank
